What the Telekom AI Phone is
On August 14, 2025, Telekom introduced the AI Phone. Behind it stands the T Phone 3, the new model in its own T-Phone line; alongside it came the T Tablet 2, an AI tablet. New is the built-in Perplexity assistant: press the Magenta button, double-tap the power button, or hold the Magenta AI icon on the lock screen, and the assistant takes questions, spoken or typed. The purchase price includes 18 months of Perplexity Pro, per Telekom; the assistant itself stays on the device permanently. It has been on sale since that same day in Germany and nine other countries, including Austria and Poland. Telekom announced a Pro version for later in 2025 at the time. If you don't want a new phone, Telekom says the Magenta AI button in the MeinMagenta app gives free access to select AI tools, including Perplexity's answer engine.
Every detail about the device in this article comes from Deutsche Telekom's press release “‘Our’ AI Phone brings ‘AI for everyone’” from August 14, 2025. It also names the entry price and the terms in a plan bundle; we haven't tested the device ourselves and don't repeat any figure here, because promotional prices change.
What it does day to day
Telekom describes the assistant as a helper for everyday questions: what to cook tonight, where a favorite band plays next, why the houseplants are wilting. The press release names seven roles for it:
- Personal secretary: create calendar entries, draft emails to contacts, summarize long content.
- Language expert: translate menus, documents, or conversations.
- Travel agent: plan routes, book restaurants through OpenTable, order an Uber.
- Nutritionist and trainer: cooking tips, ingredient lists, workout and meal plans.
- Shopping advisor: outfit additions, deals, gift ideas.
- Entertainer: concerts, books, and movies matched to taste.
- Tutor: solve math problems, explain complicated topics.
On top of that, the assistant answers questions about whatever is on the screen or in front of the camera, and handles tasks like calendar entries, emails, calls, messages, and navigation through interfaces to pre-installed apps. All of it runs in one direction: the owner asks, the device answers or acts on their behalf.
What it isn't: not a phone assistant for businesses
Some people searching for “Telekom AI Phone” actually mean something else: an AI that answers the phone when nobody at the business picks up. That's an AI phone assistant, and it has little in common with the AI Phone. Four differences:
- The assistant works for the person holding the device. It doesn't pick up when a customer calls your business; the press release says nothing about answering calls for companies.
- It creates calendar entries when you dictate them, not when a caller wants to book an appointment with your company.
- It runs on a smartphone, not on your landline or business number. An AI phone assistant is set up on your existing number by call forwarding and needs no new device.
- It's a consumer product for everyday questions. A phone assistant for businesses is configured for your processes: emergency versus routine job, appointment request, callback request.
For business customers, Telekom has a separate offering, the Conversational AI Suite; how that fits in is covered in the IONOS review, in the section on Telekom.
AI Phone vs. AI phone assistant, compared
| Feature | Telekom AI Phone | AI Phone Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | The smartphone's owner, by button or voice | The caller who calls your business; you get the result |
| What it does | Answers questions, translates, plans, writes emails, creates calendar entries (per Telekom) | Picks up, asks what's needed, books appointments, sends you a summary |
| Where it runs | On the T Phone 3 (and the T Tablet 2) | On your existing business line, via call forwarding; no new device |
| Who it's for | Consumers with everyday questions, per Telekom “AI for everyone” | Businesses that miss calls: trades, law firms, property management, auto shops |
| Example | “What can I cook tonight with these ingredients?” | “Hello, I'd like to book an appointment for a heating system service.” |
When an AI phone assistant fits your business
If calls go unanswered at your business because you're on a job site, in a meeting with a customer, or don't want to pick up after hours, you need someone to answer. An AI phone assistant takes the call, asks what it's about, books an appointment in your calendar, and sends you the summary. How to catch calls outside business hours has its own guide. AI phone, in everyday use, sometimes means a device like the AI Phone and sometimes means the phone call with an AI itself. What such a conversation sounds like, you can hear in the recording in our article Talk to AI on the Phone.
AI call is a call where an AI does the talking, for example a callback on a web inquiry. What's allowed and how to spot a legitimate AI call is covered in AI Phone Calls: Allowed, Detectable, Explained.
AI answering service is the next step up from voicemail: instead of recording a message, it holds a short conversation and captures the request. More on that on our AI Answering Service page.
